The Hartnackschule Berlin prides itself in its near 100-year history. Founded in Cologne in 1915 by Paul Emil Hartnack, the school was relocated to Berlin in 1936 and taken over in 1945 by Artur Lauterbach. It was he who evolved the "German as a Foreign Language" sector and, with a team of highly-qualified instructors, acquired for his school the official recognition as a Senate-certified complementary educational institution at universities, labour exchanges and other public organizations.

For several decades, the Hartnackschule Berlin has been an affiliate of the Verband Deutscher Privatschulen (Association of German Private Schools). Since 2000, the school is a fully certified educational institution in accordance with the ISO 9001 quality management system standards.
